firefox performed an automatic update 4 days ago. It is 3.6 version. once the browser closed it refuses to reopen-message reads you must restart firefox-update was incomplete. When you restart and try to open the browser-you get the same message. If you try to uninstall-you get the same message. Nothing works

Remove the files and folders to reset the software update feature as shown here http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update#Software_Update_not_working_properly

Delete the Firefox installation directory, default location C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\

Download the setup file from http://www.mozilla.com and run it to re-install. Doing this will not remove your bookmarks or other user data.
