Problem with selecting text for it to be accurately underlined in Thunderbird

Whenever I wanted to select text for it to be underlined, in my former Win Vista Mail I could simply click twice to just select a word, and click three times to select a whole sentence, and the selection highlight would accurately begin and end over the first and last letters of the word/sentence, and never extended into the space beyond the word's/sentence's last letter.

In Thunderbird I find, when I do the two- or the three-clicks, that the selection highlight always annoyingly extends into the space beyond the last letter.

This therefore results in the underlining of the word/sentence always extending into the space beyond the last letter - which, to me, looks sloppy.

Can one rectify this problem, or is it a permanent/embedded glitch in Thunderbird emails?

Chosen solution

Open Tools/Options/Advanced/General/Config. editor and double-click (toggle) the preference layout.word_select.eat_space_to_next_word to false, OK to close Options.

The same preference is in Firefox, about:config.
