How do I find my junk folder? Previous answer to this question does not work for me...

I am pretty clueless with my computer, am currently divorcing the man who set it all up for me so cannot ask him. My e mail connects via POP but is a virgin.net e mail address which is (as you clever people out there probably know already) no longer supported by Virgin so I cannot log on via the Virgin web site. I have not been receiving e mails from a specific source which used until recently come through no problem. I have checked with the sender that all is well at their end and been advised to check my junk folder. I can't find it! Very grateful for any advice you can give me.

As I read it, Virgin sold off their non-cable broadband business segment to Talktak, and affected customers would have to transfer their email to the new provider. So after a period of grace, your Virgin email account may have stopped working.

I would expect that particular Virgin email address/account to have died. Are you still receiving messages from other correspondents through it? Do you have alternative accounts that still work?

You may not see a junk/spam/bulk folder in a POP-connected account, because that folder could be on the server, and the POP protocol doesn't expose anything on the server other than the Inbox.

Unless you have evidence that says otherwise, I think you need to assume that the virgin.net account has died, or will die, and you need to work with Talktalk or someone else to start up a new account. I'd go for "someone else" such as gmx.com or googlemail.com, since that means you'll never have this situation again. An account/address with a third party provider will be yours to keep (for at least as long as that business survives) and won't care which ISP you use.

However you do it, you will then have to set about notifying your correspondents of your new email address. Many of us do this once and then realize the benefits of an email account which is independent of the current ISP.

In the meantime, get in touch with Talktalk. I may have misunderstood the situation and you may still have a working email account, but if Talktalk are doing any spam filtering on your behalf and putting messages into a spam or junk folder, you won't see them in Thunderbird via a POP connection. It may be as simple as swapping to a new version of the account using IMAP (the alternative to POP) or finding out how to get at your email account via the Talktalk website.

Thank you. TalkTalk recently confirmed to me that the virgin.net address is still working fine however Talk Talk won't deal with me/help me as I do not have a TalkTalk account! Indeed there are plenty of e mails still arriving from a multitude of sources so I know it's still working athough by definition you don't know what's not getting through unless you are expecting something that fails to arrive. Caught between a rock and a hard place. I will have to go and talk to my local computer shop about how to tackle this as I would need help to follow through on the suggestions you make. It's going to be a nightmare trying to notify all parties of change in e mail address but it sounds as though I have little choice. Thanks again for the prompt and helpful assessment and advice.

That's awful. Talktalk paid money to Virgin in order to acquire your email business and so ought to feel an obligation to help you.

Who do you now pay for your internet connection? Virgin, or Talktalk? It seems to me that one or the other is taking your money and yet you're not getting any support whatsoever.

Unfortunately if your soon-to-be-ex-husband was the account holder ("bill payer"), they could argue that you don't have any right to continue using this account. Might be time to cut loose and go it alone. Do you feel you can trust your local computer shop to provide sound advice and assistance?

I think either the divorce, or the Virgin/Talktalk deal, in isolation, could create serious difficulties for you. In combination, it's hard to see an easy or pleasant outcome with this virgin.net account.

On a more hopeful note…

I would try adding your virgin.net account to Thunderbird again but choose IMAP for this one. Assuming that you know your email address and its password, this should be possible.

An IMAP-connected version of your email account should show you any folders set up on the server, specifically any spam/junk folders they are running on your behalf.

My ISP is now Plusnet (virtually the only ISP that would supply this poorly connected remote rural area of the UK), broadband speed of often insufficient even to use iPlayer so service is lousy. PlusNet say they can't help me with e mail issues as it's a virgin.net address! So, I am caught between a rock and a hard place. My soon-to-be-ex had his own virgin.net address and in fact I was the bill payer so I don't think he'll cause me any ongoing problems on that front. I will go along and see my trusted experts locally and ask them to help me sort this out. Thanks again for your advice.
