On thunderbird 45.1 I have increased the font size with theme font size changer. But that only increases the size on incoming mail. I need to make the e-mail text on lower half of screen larger for my 89 year old mother to read. How do I do this?

Thanks for any help

Tools|Options|Display|Formatting->Advanced and set the fonts and sizes. Assuming you use a western language and alphabet, I'd suggest you set at least "Latin" and "Other writing systems". The "minimum size" setting is particularly worth your attention.

The sizes are in pixels not points and so you'll need larger values than you might be accustomed to; try 14 or greater. You may also like to clear the checkbox "Allow messages to use other fonts".
