I have just moved to bt and can receive emails ok, but after configuring SMPT settings to those given to me by bt, I still can not send any emails. I don't know what's going on? I have had the same email address for 18 years and never had a problem moving server - once they give me the settings usually all runs fine.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the technician at bt - he wasn't familiar with Thunderbird and could get his head around the fact that I have a non BT email account which uses the BT server, but he said there was no-one else who was familiar with this either!!!?

Beginning to wish I'd stuck with plusnet - peeps there always seemed very clued in.

Does anyone have a clue what might be going wrong please?

Many thanks.

Using Thunderbird to pick up Which.com mail. Server, mail.btinternet.com , Port 465 , username (my new bt email address) Authentication Normal, security SSL

I have a bt email address. It is set up as a Pop mail account and I use the bt email address and bt pop and smtp settings, where the username is the bt email address. A straight forward setup for the bt email address.

I also have a website with a different email address eg: mail at mywebsite dot com I have created a POP mail account for that email address to download directly from that server (not bt), but I have to use the BT server to send emails.

To send emails using a different email address via the bt server, it needs to know what that non-bt email address is and what password you use for that non-bt email address. This is done via the bt webmail account.

Logon to webmail server. select 'Options' Under 'Advanced Options' here you can add the other email address and select to use it as 'Send only'

If you cannot see this, try getting your webmail to view as the older verion. hover over the cogwheel in the top right corner and select settings > Viewing email > select 'Basic' and click save.

then you can use the bt smtp server.
