Hi! I have a problem where the local SWF-files won't open in firefox, IE works just fine but not for firefox for some reason which i cannot explain fully but i will try to with some pictures as help.

https://imageshack.com/i/exOUUG2vp (Pic 1)

If you look at this picture (Pic 1) you see two lines for SWF applications nr 1. this is "SWF-fil(application/x-shockw)" and nr 2. this is "SWF-fil(application/x-shockwave-flash)" as i see it the first looks like it is wrong in some way (not sure though). and if i try to open a local SWF-file with firefox it just ask me if i want to "open file" or "save file" when the settings is as the the first picture.

In this image (Pic 2) i have made a change to the settings on how it should handle "SWF-fil(application/x-shockw)" by saying "Use Internet Explorer" which then works since it works in IE to begin with. but it won't work in firefox still (ofcourse since it won't open in firefox with that setting).

What i think is that it should use the one that is highlighted in this picture (Pic 3) which is the second one "SWF-fil(application/x-shockwave-flash)", since this is the one making use of the flash plugin, what i think is that the first one in the list is taking over the second and in that way canceling the opening of local SWF-files in firefox, i am not sure though it might be something else that cause this problem.

I hope this information is helpful to solve the problem. I don't need an answer unless it is something i can do myself like resetting something or similar.

I have not tried this in safe mode, though i do not think it will be a different result. All i ask is that someone look into it and see what can be wrong and see if they can fix it since i really haaaaate using IE for any reason, no matter how small or big the reason.

I am not the type to answer quickly if i get an answer, if i answer at all, so do not expect me to be able to answer your questions if you have any, though i think that won't be needed with my information and the pictures included in my explanation, I will though try to go back here and look/answer...

I hope this can be fixed since i really love firefox as my default browser.

Thanks!

Chosen solution

Rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!
