what is the latest version of Java
Java.com says the latest version is 7 update 4. When I have Firefox check for add on updates it says that 6 update 32 is still current. Who's correct here?

When I visited the test page in Firefox 12 on Windows 7, I was offered the new Java 7.
http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
After installation, it identifies itself as Java(TM) Platform SE 7 U4 10.4.1.255, Next Generation Java Plug-in 10.4.1 for Mozilla browsers
It's possible that Oracle is rolling it out selectively to watch for bugs, and as far as I know, there is no security-related reason to move from Java 6 Update 32 to Java 7. That could change in the future.
What do you get on the Mozilla Plugin Check page?
When I checked FF add ons it came back that V6 update 32 was current. I'll leave it until FF says to change it. Thanks for the reply
Both version 1.6 and 1.7 are currently being supported. What you are seeing that is causing confusion is probably the beginning of the process to get users to install 1.7. Below is the "Java SE Support Roadmap" page on the Oracle/Java site.
- Java 6 will reach End-of-Life (EOL) in November 2012 (only enterprise customers can receive support beyond that date, according to the information on the page below)
- Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap --> http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/eol-135779.html?ssSourceSiteId=ocomen
