I was on youtube.com, when suddenly, when I refreshed the main page, I got logged out from the site. If I were to manually log out of youtube, it would log me out from my gmail too, but it didn't seem to be the case here.

I also logged out of my kotaku.com kinja account. I visited the site several times the day I logged out and I can confirm it was logged out then. The next day, I visited the site and I was already logged in.

Anyone know what this problem is?

Make sure you not running Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode.

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

If you not using Private Browsing Mode

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > History>
  • Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history":
  • Select: [x] Accept Cookies from sites
    • Accept third party cookies: "From Visited"
  • Keep until "They Expire"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Clear history when Firefox closes"

If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then check the settings for the Firefox application.

I'm not in Private Browsing mode, and my browser is already set to accept 3rd party cookies and keep them until they expire before the whole incident happen. I did not clear any recent history either, nor did I use software like CCleaner.

So, I'm a little worried. Is this caused by a virus or just a glitch in firefox? I understand how clearing recent history or having my browser set to not accept 3rd party cookies may log me OUT of a website I logged in if I were to close or quit the browser, but how does it log me IN of a website I logged out when I quit the browser and reopened it?

The OS I'm running is the Mac OS X Snow Leopard, if that is a relevant info.

Details like websites remembering you (log you in automatically) are stored in a cookie.

  • Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

Clearing cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you would like to keep.
