Hi,

A fully functioning Firefox updated recently to Firefox Quantum. The browser starts and I have captured the 'About' window for you:

However, currently it is useless as it won't load any website pages. No errors are reported.

I have no problems with Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.

I believe I have followed all the help and troubleshooting advice on the Mozilla website. In particular, - I have removed and allowed Firefox through the Windows 7 Pro 64-bit Firewall. - I have uninstalled Firefox, rebooted, Run CCleaner and reinstalled Firefox 64bit (It is now correctly installed under C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox - I have refreshed Firefox. - All Plugins Disabled.

Nothing works!

Firefox has, for many years, been my preferred browser so this issue is proving to be very frustrating.

Please, can anyone help fix this nonsense? It is difficult to understand why, at the time of installation, Firefox could not configure itself correctly. Never experienced anything like this before.

Ya was hoping. It works for everyone else, almost. Ok, well how about we take you down as nothing seems to be working. At least then can wait for a full version 58+ to try.

Going back : unfortunately 56.0.2 and below is no longer safe to use for every day use do to secuity issues, but 52.5.2 ESR is. It will continue to get security updates until May 2018, and you can download and install it from this page: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be deleted or removed in any version update after May 2018.

You should make a backup of your Profile before going back and just because: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Nope, nor does about:config. All I get is the small black dot oscillating horizontally from side-to-side adjacent to 'New Tab'. Same result with repeated attempts.

However, I can access the 'Options' page each time but only on the second attempt. If I try with one 'New Tab' it doesn't work - just that oscillating dot. However, on trying again Firefox opens a second tab and the 'Options' page loads. This has been consistent behaviour with each reinstall of Firefox.

Have you uninstalled like this : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. Phew! Nice to know I'm not alone. Your advice is appreciated and thanks for your input. Latterly I too have been thinking ESET NOD32 is the culprit. However, as I've stated, I have 2 other systems with fully updated ESET NOD32 and Firefox installed and Firefox Quantum is working fine in each case. This problem, for whatever reason, seems to be specific to my M18x system which, otherwise, is without any issues whatsoever and continues to be very responsive. I note when Windows is fully loaded at boot, and everything has settled down, that the System Idle Process is sitting at 99%. So, if some form of Malware is implicated in this then it must be active only while Firefox is running and uses minimal resources.

If you wade through the earlier posts in this thread you will note that I have followed, more or less, the uninstallation/reinstallation procedures you have described. I have noted that the Mozilla Firefox folders are deleted automatically each time I uninstall the product. Also, the entry in Windows Firewall is removed. However, I will try again by following your instructions.

BTW, what's the difference between the 'Stub' and 'Full' installer and why should it matter? I presume the 'Stub' installer, when run, downloads the full installation from the net with the remote possibility of file corruption occurring. However, I believe I have been using full installers each time, and that included the earlier 64-bit and 32-bit variants.

Okay, I've now done as you asked. Only I went a step further by deleting the content of:

Temp (AppData-Local) Temp-Windows Temporary Internet Files

There was no option for Cleanup System Files in Disk Cleanup. I made sure every option was checked. Otherwise I followed your instructions precisely. I downloaded the Firefox full installer from your provided link. My original installer was much smaller in size so must have been the 'Stubinstaller' version. Several restarts were performed after the first which involved Windows Configuring Updates. This took a while so not sure what was going on as I have not installed any Windows Updates throughout this process. After the penultimate restart I ran CCleaner to clear out any residual Registry items following which the System was restarted agai.

So much to read......Not all times do they get deleted. Is why ask to go do so. Some where somebody must have said update Video Drivers. Your ESET upgrade should have fixed issues I would hope. No idea how old this thing is what the ram is as am lost a page behind now and about to move to page 3. Ok this is last resort as you mention 99% this should tame it.

Go the 3 Bar Menu then Options --> General --> Performance and untick everything. change the recommended size lower then see how it runs. Note: 0 = No Multiprocessor = slow again. Try 2 Restart Firefox after making these changes please.

I do understand. It's pretty daunting to be faced with such a barrage of information. In my defense, I am trying my best to be as clear and thorough as is possible in an attempt to avoid misunderstandings and erroneous conclusions.

I believe the video driver angle may be a red herring as both my laptops/notebooks have older drivers. However, my new rig is pretty up to date (385.02) in that respect. My other laptop is an Acer Aspire V5-5716 with graphics switchable between Intel HD Graphics 3000 and a GeForce GT 620M 1GB card (drivers have never been updated since purchase several years ago) and 8GB RAM. Both my Desktop with its i7-5960X, GTX 1080Ti and 16GB RAM have no problems with Firefox Quantum.

I have a very similar problem, and software, ie, Window 7 Pro, with Firefox version 57.0.2 64 bit. Since loading this version. It can take several minutes before a page loads, not quite so long after that first page to load other pages, but still seem interminably slow, ie, walk away and do something else.

I get the impression, not really tested, that everything is now running more slowly.

From other recent posts regarding 57.0.2 64 bit, it seems it is creating a wide variety of issues for many users.

At the very least it seems a pathway back to a more stable version is essential, not just for this release, but as a general policy. Not just to see if the Firefox version is the cause , but if not, to try to eliminate other potential sources.

This doesn't appear to me to be a resolved issue. Users are choosing to opt out of using Firefox altogether, rather than persevere.

You are, of course, correct. However, it has yet to be determined how much of this is System specific or due to Firefox's inability to create the correct installation environment, with all the necessary prerequisites, for it to function properly.

It would seem that it has an easier job achieving just that on some systems while struggling with others. As I stated, I have another laptop and a self built desktop PC, both with Windows 7 (Pro 64-bit on one, the custom self build and Home premium on the laptop), and v.57.0.2 works flawlessly without any speed-related or System slowdown issues.

Strictly speaking I shouldn't have marked this issue as having been solved as, quite clearly, it has not. The solution, for me, was to fall back to v.52.5.2 ESR. It functions fine. Unfortunately this will only last until May 2018 when, presumably, I will be trying the latest Firefox version. If nothing has changed then THAT's the time I will move to CHROME on the affected laptop.

I have high hopes that, given time, the Firefox Developers will provide a solution.
