AFTER USING FIREFOX FOR YEARS, I NOW FIND I CANNOT ACCESS ANY WEBSITE WITH FIREFOX... YET GOOGLE CHROME IS WORKING WELL.
COMCAST, MY ISP, EXPERIENCED AN OUTAGE IN MY AREA ON OR ABOUT JAN. 2, 2012. WHEN IT RETURNED, I FOUND I COULD NOT ACCESS ANY WEBSITE AND USED GOOGLE CHROME TO SEEK HELP. THE SUGGESTION, I RECEIVED ADVISED TO USE WINDOWS EXPLORER TO SEEK THE FILE PERMISSIONS IN MY PROFILE FOLDER. THEN TO CLICK ON THE FILE NAMED cert8.db. AT THIS POINT I RAN INTO A DEAD END BECAUSE I COULD NOT FIND MY profile folder IN WINDOWS EXPLORER, NOR COULD I FIND THE FILE NAMED cert8.db. AT THIS POINT I AM FORCED TO ASK: "WHAT DO I DO NOW?"
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT I ALREADY HAVE TRIED DELETING MOZILLA FIREFOX ENTIRELY FROM MY COMPUTER, AND THEN RELOADING THE CURRENT VERSION. I STILL GET THE SAME MESSAGE AFTER TRYING TO ACCESS ANY WEBSITE; NAMELY, "COULD NOT INITIALISE THE BROWSER'S SECURITY COMPONENT. THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE IS PROBLEMS WITH FILES IN YOUR BROWSER'S PROFILE DIRECTORY. PLEASE CHECK THAT THIS DIRECTORY HAS NO READ/WRITE RESTRICTIONS AND YOUR HARD DISK IS NOT FULL OR CLOSE TO FULL. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU EXIT THE BROWSER AND FIX THE PROBLEM......."

Hi,
The path to the profile would usually be My Computer > ?:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\***.default, if there are no other profiles. If there is another profile, it would be that instead of ***.default. You may have to enable hidden files and folders.
Please see this.
