For the past few months (it's October 2017) after starting the browser I can open 3 tabs tops before the browser slows down incredibly, things load slower, videos stop and start, ads don't close quickly. Eventually, 3 tabs or more tabs, the whole thing comes to a halt and freezes and I have to restart. I've cleared my history. Doesn't help. I don't know what to do. Thanks for any help.

Chosen solution

I don't know why, but Mozilla has been removing parts of Firefox. Many have claimed they are going elsewhere.

Firefox, its options, and add-ons are the reason I use it. I stopped updating with v54. I have add-ons I refuse to lose.

What's your computer system and Firefox version?

Many have reported having dozens of tabs open.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

It's getting to the stage when I'm going to have no option but to switch to Chrome because Firefox is becoming so unreliable. Or perhaps so reliable - because I can rely on it to freeze or run slow, time and time again. No other browser freezes so often - no other browser seems to run slow like Firefox does.

The trouble is that I much prefer Firefox because of the way it looks and the things I can do to customise it but if I can't use it to browse comfortably then what use are all those options? Every single day recently I've been adjusting settings, changing parameters and applying recommended changes and all to no avail.

For instance: I don't allow hardware acceleration but pages still freeze. It's not as if they're weird pages - for instance www.espncricinfo and www.thesun.co.uk are both guaranteed to cause freezes. (I've asked those sites for help but nothing they suggest has cured the problems. I added YesScript to help cure the problems and then I couldn't see half the items on the pages. I've used the ublock blocker then find that certain pages won't respond. I enjoy online jigsaws but now the page says, "You need to change this setting (or open the puzzles in Chrome or Edge) until Firefox fixes the issue in the next update" - 'this setting' referring to hardware acceleration, but I've done that to no avail. And obviously I've tried clearing history, cookies etc without it making any difference.

Firefox seems so loaded with technical problems that I've arrived at the situation where I just can't be bothered to twiddle and tinker around any more so it's high time that I browsed elsewhere. Damn shame but tough.

Thanks FredMcD - locked and loaded. I used Waterfox ages ago when Firefox seemed to be having numerous issues but then it seemed to fade away and I was told that it had been absorbed into the 'new' Firefox. Delighted therefore to find it again. Cheers
