Firefox automatically updates on my computer. During the last update a pop-up told me safety features were no longer available and may leave my computer vulnerable. What does this mean and what can I do. I really want to continue to use firefox but don't want my computer to be "infected".

Firefox 16 is the last version of Firefox that works with Mac OS X 10.5.

WTF. Get a new computer? Are you kidding me?

Yep. The fix is to use Safari. As a long time Firefox user, I am stunned that they'd suggest just going out to buy a computer as a solution. Right. I am writing this from my very Firefox-like Safari browser.

Where have you seen Mozilla suggest buying a new computer?

You have two options here if you want to stay most secure (Safari isn't secure at all as it hasn't been updated in ages on 10.5).

  1. Continue to use Firefox 16.0.2. While this isn't going to be a guarantee for security, it's the safest browser for 10.5.
  2. Either purchase a new computer, or upgrade to Mac 10.6 or higher.

In the pop UP!!! They say Apple stopped support for Mac 10.5 in 2009!!! And I only bought this one in 2009

Mac 10.5 was released in 2007, and Apple released the last update for it and dropped support in August 2009.

Option 2 is not funny... There are software problems too when you upgrade for instance FCPro ?? And a new computer??? Come on. I bought this one in 2009 and intend te work on it for at least some years... They are nog THAT cheap!! And option 1 is not very satisfactory either.

Why does Mozilla do this? Do they have financial profits? Do they and Apple cooperate??

May be better switch to Windows then after all... come on .... 2 years for an operating system.....

We will periodically drop support for old operating systems for several reasons: 1. The infrastructure to test and build for old operating systems that few people use is huge. We have to find a balance between supporting the maximum users and being able to have a sane testing platform. 2. Continuing to support older operating systems restricts us in new technologies we can use to support new, more popular operating systems. For example, Windows 2000 support was preventing us from using a more modern compiler that would significantly speed up Firefox on more modern OS's. 3. No, this isn't a conspiracy ;) Apple dropped support for this OS over 3 years ago, which means it's already insecure (no OS security patches). Also we've watched the number of users on this OS and they are going down every week due to users upgrading to newer computers/OS.

Switching to Safari (or Chrome) will only make things worse. The latest version of Safari available for Mac OS X 10.5 is less secure than the latest version of Firefox. Chrome doesn't support 10.5 either.

You should really update to Mac OS X 10.6 or later, since there are other unpatched security issues with Mac OS X 10.5 that updating your browser won't fix. If you really can't afford the $30 upgrade, you can try TenFourFox, which is based on the latest Firefox but compatible with 10.5.

How do I do that? I'm willing to pay if that's what it takes. Seems like every corner I turn, there's something about my needing something else.

Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.5

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard (but have a look at the system requirements - this will only work on intel-based systems)

I know! This is obscene. They should be ashamed!

Okay, but will it work with if I currently have 10.5.8?
