Is there a way to make words bold or to underline things in email in thunderbird?
When sending a note with the names of books for instance, I like to underline the name of the book which is the correct thing to do but I cannot find anywhere in Thunderbird where I can use this option. I also cannot find how to use italics or bold to emphasize something. Please advise. Thank you. Billie Matelski

perhaps if you compose in HTML.
Right click the account, in the folder pane select settings and in composition and addressing select compose in HTML.

Thank you so much, I never knew what HTML stood for.
I did as suggested and "Compose messages in HTML format" is already checked but I still don't see how to underline, bold, etc.
Why show a copy of your address book? You do not write messages in there.
Matt,
I asked the question some time ago and don't recall why I included an attachment of my Address Book, but that doesn't answer the question I asked: I did as suggested and "Compose messages in HTML format" is already checked but I still don't see how to underline, bold, etc.
What I ended up doing is using "Edit as new message" in the toolbar and that gives me a new message with a toolbar that allows me to edit with Bold, Underlining, etc. capabilites.
If you open a Write window and there is no Formatting toolbar displayed, one of two things are happening.
1. You are composing in Text and not HTML.
2. The Formatting toolbar is turned off. View-Toolbars-Formatting Bar
Going from your example you are set to Text since you can open an existing HTML and the toolbar is there.
If you hold the Shift key when clicking Write is the toolbar there?
