How do I get Thunderbird to send me the link to recover my lost password?
I need to log-in to Thunderbird but apparently am not using the correct user name and/or password. Thunderbird will not send me the link to get these changed. I have asked for the link to be sent by earthlink and gmail. I get the message that it has been sent but I don't receive it.

I think you will find your anti virus is causing problems. However to diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:
- Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
- Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Thunderbird has nothing to do with your email password. There is no place to request a new password through Thunderbird and one is not going to be sent to you. Contact your email provider. Your email password is administered with them.
The problem originated when I had to turn off my computer. When I restarted it and clicked to activate Thunderbird I was asked to log in. I used what I believed to be the correct username and pass word but it would not accept them. I tried my earthlink username and password and that didn't work either. I went to the Thunderbird page to restore or change username and password and requested a link to restore or change password or username. I put in my email address and it told me a message had been sent to my email address with the link requested. I never got such a message. I repeated the operation and still never got the message. I repeated the message using my wife's gmail address and no message was sent there either. I can't login to Thunderbird. I need help!

You do not log into Thunderbird. You provide your username and password when your providers server asks for one. If you go to your providers webmail page and your username and password works there then there is nothing wrong with either of those and Matt's suggestions come into play. There is no Thunderbird page to ask for your email password to be sent to you. As stated, Thunderbird has nothing to do with your email password. The incorrect password error message is caused by several things. Go to your providers webmail site to confirm you have the password correct. If it works there, look at other possible causes.

What Thunderbird page?
If you mean on support.mozilla.org then an account here is only for this support.mozilla.org site and nowhere else.
Thanks to all who replied to my question. I solved the problem by using system restore, going back to a restore point a few days old.
Best regards,
Charles
