From the information with your post, it appears that you have the default setting for color management, which is to apply a color profile if one is identified in the image. Unfortunately, the actual implementation is not as straightforward as it sounds. You might want to read these articles:

Microsoft has mirrored a test page which demonstrates your browser's behavior in applying some common profiles: IE Test Drive - Color Management. This page might be helpful in comparing the results in your current browsers, and checking the results of different settings for the color_management preferences in about:config.

Hope this helps you find a setting that fits your needs.

The gfx.color_management.enabled pref is no longer used (you get redirected)

Be sure to use the gfx.color_management.mode pref instead (value of 0 disables color management).

You can try to set the gfx.color_management.enablev4 pref to true on the about:config page and close and restart Firefox to enable ICC V4 support in Firefox 8+, but that feature is not yet fully implemented, so there may be problems in some cases.

May I offer some feedback to everyone who tries to be helpful answering users' problems? I do this in the spirit of trying to help all concerned, because I've had the same sort of experience with other Firefox problems. Remember that Firefox may be developed by enthusiasts but it's used by ordinary, computer-ignorant people.

If I'm to be totally honest, the responses pointed me to documents that were full of techno-speak. However, I followed the links (more techno-speak) and the links in them until I came across a reference to the Color Management plug-in. All the documentation for that is also written in techno-speak, probably aimed at techies, but I installed it anyway. Nothing happened, but by keep pressing buttons blindly I ended up in about:addons, clicked on extensions and then options, whereupon I was presented with the options I wanted. And now my photos are displaying the way I want them.

I cannot have understood even 5% of everything I've read in the course of doing this. I just pressed buttons in blind hope/faith. As a user, I was looking for a (pointer to a) solution along the lines of "Do this, then do this, then do this, ....... , then restart Firefox and you should be OK".

Oh, and one final point ..... Photography is my second career. Before that I had a 30+ year career in IT - much of it in software development. So unlike most users I do know my way around computers in general, just not in Firefox.

The Color Management add-on offers a reasonably easy "on"/"off" switch for Firefox's color management features. Sorry for the diversions if that's all you wanted!
