Launching Firefox 8 freezes my entire computer!

Since this morning, whenever I try to launch Firefox 8, the window "hangs" with the "Not Responding" header, and my whole computer freezes. I have to ctrl-alt-delete and restart. Running Vista. Haven't downloaded anything new or unusual. Uninstalled & reinstalled Firefox three times, no change. I love Firefox and don't want to lose my bookmarks (which looks like it may have already happened)-- please help!
