Dear Firefox,

My laptop will not boot up but I can access my files through the use if a external hook up to my other computer. I need to pull my bookmarks off that drive before I reformat it. Is there a location I can get all my old bookmarks from? I have a lot of important links in there and never realized you had a backup option that I could have saved them to.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Thank You!

Troy

On Windows 2000 and Windows XP, profile folders are in this location, by default: (from the Profile document at MozillaZine)

C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows login/user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>

The Application Data folder is a hidden folder; to show hidden folders, open Windows Explorer and choose "Tools → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folders".

If you have more than one profile folder, check the dates inside for last use updated: places.sqlite in your bookmarkbackups of your .json files.

You will want to read these - I would not have been able to just use my bookmarks files, there was a lot of work done in my profile.

I don't know if Firefox is the only thing of interest to you on your laptop, you might look at some of the check lists I had when I went to Windows 7.

Your users file would have a lot of your own application data information, including Firefox profiles, but you probably have other applications as well., plus other user files on your system. Much of my own data in a major folder bk1, and other major user folders, then all of the user data I can't control where they put it is in in users.

In other words you might want to backup all of

C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows login/user name>\Application Data

In fact right now you don't have much to lose, as you would just start over, you could try working with multiple profiles

My laptop has Windows Vista on it. Would the files be in the same place?

Somehow I located that directory on my regular computer (that I am on now) the other day. When I tried looking where you said on the laptop hard drive, I could not locate the file. I cannot even locate the "Application Data" file on this computer that is running Windows XP.

Any suggestions?

Thank You, Troy

  • XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
  • Vista/Windows 7: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
  • Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

The "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K and the "AppData" folder in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders.

Thank you so much for your help. I was able to find the file and save it. My hard drive actually went out, but I was able to get the file before it actually got real bad. Now I am also aware that I can back that up.

I appreciate all of your help!!!
