Was reading a mail message and on closing this, the screen no longer displayed the various folders on the left hand side of the screen. What could have caused this and how do I go about recovering the missing folders and heir associated information?

It is possible you have closed the 'Folder Pane'. Menu app icon > View > Layout > select 'Folder Pane'

It is also possible to hover mouse pointer over the left edge of Thunderbird window when you see a thicker line appear and the pointer changes to a double head arrow, left click and drag to the right. This can seem a bit tricky as you must drag on the thicker line and not when it is thin because that is just the edge of the window itself.

If the Folder Pane is visible but no accounts nor folders showing then it is possible you have selected a view (which is like a filter) to display something you have not set up eg: Favourites. So it may appear empty.

Check you have this selected: Menu app icon > View > Folders > All
