If you go to save a "new" bookmark and Firefox offers "edit" - that indicates you already have that URL saved as a bookmark. The toolbar button for bookmarks was changed for Firefox 57 and now doesn't show all your bookmarks and no folders; mostly you see "Recently Bookmarked" and little else. If you open Bookmarks from the Menu Bar or in the Bookmarks Sidebar, then you'll be able to see all your bookmarks.

Easily changed though, to get that button more like it used to work.

  • Click on the 57 library icon library icon and go to bookmarks > bookmarking tools > add bookmarks menu to the toolbar.
  • Then you click the Bookmark Menu icon (star on tray) icon that's newly appearing on the toolbar, you'll get to the same bookmarks menu like in earlier versions...

The info in the below link may help you to restore bookmarks. "Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks and saves the last 15 backups for safekeeping. This article describes how to restore your bookmarks from the automatic backups that Firefox creates, how to save and restore your own bookmark backup files, and how to move your bookmarks to another computer.
