On windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 on a 64 bit machine Thunderbird keeps crashing and insisting that a new email account be created. All emails are lost when this happens. Yes, I have backups.

Is there a maximum number of emails and/or file sizes in Thunderbird? Mail folder is 5.84 GB

The crash reports events folder is currently empty.

I use a PoP mail account for a good reason.

The file system is NTSF.

Processor is Xeon W3550 3.07 GHz

6 GB memory

128 GB SSD system drive

Win32 is perfectly ok on both windows 32bit and 64 bit.

In Win 64 bit, Thunderbird 32bit should be installed here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\

So it is possible the older profile name folders are still in the 'Profiles' folder. C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name>\

...or by using Thunderbird menu path Help->Troubleshooting information->click on the "Show Folder" button.

The AppData folder is folder is a hidden folder; to show hidden folders, open a Windows Explorer window and choose "Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folders".

Do you use CCleaner ? If yes, then stop it from accessing Thunderbird folders as it is probably deleting necessary files.

Thunderbird is installed in the Program Files (x86) folder.

The profile is in the C:\Users\admin\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name>\ and I can see it.

Yes, I do use CCleaner. I'll conduct some experiments to see it that is the problem including stopping CCleaner from accessing the Thunderbird folder. Is this a known problem?

I have tried saving the folders in the profile and simply copying them to the new profile. Once in a while that works but not always.

The next time T'bird asks to start a new email I'll save a screen shot and add it to the discussion.

No experiments needed, the last update to CCleaner IS KNOWN to screw with Profile Folder(s)/Files. Immediate stop of CCleaner touching ANYTHING Thunderbird will fix this. Also of note, Thunderbird has it's own built-in cleanup mechanism to access it Menu > Options > Account Settings. Once there you will see the top link is Server Settings, near the bottom of that page you'll see Manage Storage options, chose whatever one(s) suit your uses.
