Since latest update for windows 8.1 firefox asks every time to be the standard browser. In windows settings (standard programs) it is already established as such. But in Firefox settings (general) it is shown constantly to be not the standard one.

You can disable its asking by going to menu>preferences>general then uncheck the box that says always check to see if firefox is the default browser. I would also try making it the default browser from there, see if that helps.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Thanks a lot for your quick and competent response! The most simple and most useful hint came from "jon": unchecking the default browser box. From a practical point of view I now have peace, but the problem is not really solved at depth. Meanwhile, I am convinced that it is an error of Windows, since other standard programs (e.g. PDF reader) can no longer be changed too.
