Why is Firefox suddenly adding things (e.g. special toolbars) without my express acceptance, and how do I stop it?

Firefox would always advise me when there is going to be an update, and ask if I wanted to accept an add-on or toolbar included with the update. Now it appears that it is automatically updating and including the toolbars and add-ons without asking me. How do I change the settings so I can stop that?

hello, firefox updates never include toolbars or other unwanted programs - please always download firefox from the original location at getfirefox.com.

you might have a problem with adware on your pc. please go to firefox > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner.

Thanks for your suggestions, madperson. I checked the addons and found a Java addon. I know I recently updated Java, and the problem started after that. I have disabled that addon. Hopefully that will take care of it. I will wait and see.
