my toolbar with things like bookmarks, history. etc has disappears. I can get it temporarily by hitting ALT

You can make the Menu Bar visible via the right-click context menu of a toolbar or via "Customize -> Show/Hide Toolbars" to have the main Menu bar with the File/Edit/History/Bookmarks/Tools menus visible.
