Restore tabs on open when having more than one window open

I have set a number of pinned tabs and leave a few other tabs always open. I set Firefox to restore the tabs when I close it and reopen it. Most of the time I have just one Firefox window open and this works fine. Occasionally, however, I need to open a second window usually with just one tab and if I forget and close the main Firefox window with the pinned tabs, etc before the single window one, Firefox reloads this single tab when I reopen it. Is there a way to avoid this behaviour?

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox Title bar to prevent losing tabs in windows in case you have unnoticed (background) windows open as only the last closed window gets removed.

  • "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File -> Exit
  • Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File -> Quit

If this happens then check whether you can undo closed windows via "History -> Recently Closed Windows". Note that Firefox remembers three closed windows as set via browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo for windows and browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo for tabs on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can click the button to "Accept the Risk and Continue".
