Disable new URL bar in Version 77
Hello everyone,
Looks like Firefox keeps pushing this unpopular feature again :(
I tried all the tricks described in the "Disable new URL bar in Version 75", and it is not working.
Could anyone guide what to do to prevent url bar from expanding?

Hii
Would you do this please :
Type in the address bar about:config and press Enter. (ignore the warning)
Type in the search bar and look for the preference :
browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus
and set its value to false
Do the same with these preferences :
browser.urlbar.update1
browser.urlbar.update1.interventions
browser.urlbar.update1.searchTips
Then close and restart Firefox.
(if it's only the Top Sites suggestions that you want to get rid of : setting the value of first preference to "false" will do that)
I hope it would resolve your problem...

Hi Aashish,
That's the instruction I got from the previous "Disable new URL bar in Version 75" and it does not do the trick this time :( .
Ken,
Sorry what was working in Firefox 75 no longer works in Firefox 77, to one extent or another. A preference or two that was part of the 'fix' for 75 are now gone, temporary prefs that were added for a limited time only. That time las ended now.
Sorry, but I can't help you myself, as I am so fed up with all the changes, that I am not wasting my time by fixing stuff like any more. Fed up almost all the time now it seems, that I have taken to living with the changes; and when I have enough of this silliness I'll change to a different browser.
22 1/2 years now and I am 1/2 way out the door ....
You will have to use code in userChrome.css to revert the changes made to the location bar in current Firefox releases.

In Firefox 69 and later you need to set this pref to true on the about:config page to enable userChrome.css and userContent.css in the chrome folder.
- toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets = true

'Totally agree with you - changes that don't serve any purpose most of the time; changes for the sake of change.
The average user shouldn't have to become a programmer; create a userChrome.css file and add code, just to get their browser to work the way it used to.
Hello..
Hello Airdropper,
I totally agree with you ....

In Nightly, there is a specific preference for this in about:config called browser.urlbar.update1 (previously known as browser.urlbar.megabar).
Setting that to false will revert the bar to its more typical behavior in new windows (the windows that are already open seem to keep the megabar behavior until the next session).
For anyone unfamiliar:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.update1 preference to switch the value from true to false
Note: This preference does not exist in Firefox 71-72.
heres a good way with userchrome, i couldnt get it to work like everyone else but this worked. version 77
it has preferences, just choose what you want and the page creates the css for you

Hi Ken, I've think you got some good suggestions here (along with a lot of irrelevant about:config preferences).
Have you been able to get a userChrome.css file set up successfully? If the first attempt didn't take, it could be that a folder is out of place or the preference instructing Firefox to look for the file is still false. Let us know how you're doing.
Thank you very much everyone for responding.
Ultimately, tunesrcoolII's suggestion solved the problem.
I am, just like the majority of people in the world, not able to code. So I am glad I could avoid the .css solution.
I agree with the-edmeister. Why is it that Firefox keeps pushing this unpopular feature? Even if they want to do it, they should at the very least give us the freedom to choose "Megabar or not" easily.
I don't work in the tech world, but it seems like the workers are required to "produce" some "progress" so that their bosses can access the workers' productivity... This is not just for Firefox, but any other major browsers.
Can they hear our voice? We don't really need any more new features. All we want is a stable browser which does not add/omit current features...
Thank you all again for the help and hopefully this thread will be a guide for the people who gets stuck with the same problem...
When I started with this browser a guy named Mark had just written it to browse the newly formed World Wide Web. He was still in school. In Indiana I think. Well you boys killed it. I will check back from time to time maybe you will see the light. Later and so long. jim
