I recently bought a new phone and set up all my email accounts on that successfully, I wanted to have mine and my wifes emails on my laptop and have followed the procedure as in tutorials ie tools, account settings, add mail account, then entered my wifes name as "your name" her email address, and gmail password, checks configuration, but then comes up with "unable to login at server. probably wrong configuration, username or password". have tried adding several email address all the same error, but if I check the configuration on another laptop where they do work it the they are the same ie server name ports name authentication.

What is your version of TB? If it's lower than 60.9.1 or 68.2.1, it won't have the fix for Google OAuth2 authentication that is necessary to add IMAP gmail accounts to TB with default settings.

Thanks for coming back, I did check what version was running and whether any updates were due, it says "thunderbird is up to date version is 68.3.1 I'm not sure if this is the latest

68.3.1 is the latest. Are you trying to add POP or IMAP accounts? POP is a bit more complicated, as it requires 'normal password' authentication, which can fail if 'less-secure' apps aren't enabled or two-step verification is on the account. IMAP with OAuth2 authentication should work by using the regular account password in the OAuth browser window, independent of the 'less-secure' apps setting or two-step verification. The only additional requirement for OAuth is that google.com cookies be allowed in Tools/Options/Privacy in TB.

I'm not sure which of these factors applies in your case, but gmail account setup isn't as straightforward as it used to be.

Hi tried reloading TB anyway. cookies are enabled and google is on list it is IMAP see screenshots

The settings are correct, and I can't say why it doesn't work, unless since this is not a regular @gmail.com address, you have to enable IMAP access for the account. But you have obviously managed to add a different .biz account. Do you have a security app that's recently updated? Some are known to interfere with secure connections between TB and the server.
