Errors when accessing pages with Quirks mode
I'm running Firefox 66.0.5 on Windows 10 Home, Version 1809. I've been seeing the following event log issues for months and have finally found the issues occur when Firefox accesses sites with "Render Mode: Quirks mode" such as https://money.cnn.com/data/markets/.
The following error occurs twice in the system log and the source is Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCOM. The PID shows it is a Host Process for Windows Services running under the Network Service user:
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {2593F8B9-4EAF-457C-B68A-50F6B8EA6B54}
and APPID
{15C20B67-12E7-4BB6-92BB-7AFF07997402}
to the user xxxxx\xx SID (S-1-5-21-xxxxxx
-xxxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxx) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.
At the same time, the following is generated in "Microsoft-Windows-AppXDeploymentServer/Operational"
First: Starting validation and setting the Trust Label on package Microsoft.VP9VideoExtensions_1.0.20952.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe with flags 0x3.
Second: Package Microsoft.VP9VideoExtensions_1.0.20952.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe has Trust Label already. Flags: 0x3
Third: Finished validation and setting the Trust Label on package Microsoft.VP9VideoExtensions_1.0.20952.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe with flags 0x3.
If I use IE, instead of Firefox, I still get event log entries but they are different:
First: DllHost (5100,D,35) Internet_NOEDP_LEGACY_IDB: Error -1919 validating header page on flush map file "C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Indexed DB\Internet.jfm". The flush map file will be invalidated. Second: DllHost (5100,D,35) Internet_NOEDP_LEGACY_IDB: Flush map file "C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Indexed DB\Internet.jfm" will be deleted. Reason: ReadHdrFailed.
Since this issue with Firefox is creating about 50 to 100 system errors per day, I've tried to resolve it in multiple ways. Making changes in Component Services will not have any affect. Also, under Internet Options, select Advance. Under Multimedia, uncheck "Enable alernative codecs in HTML5 media elements* - This also has no affect.
I understand what Quirks mode is, so I know I cannot change how developers create their web pages. Does anybody have any suggestions on what I can to do mitigate the errors in the System event log?

That page should open in Standards mode. Odd that it would open in Quirks Mode for you.

What codecs are you trying to disable? Firefox has numerous preferences you could experiment with in the about:config preferences editor, but it would be helpful for us to have a better understanding of what you want to knock out.
Hi jscher2000, at this point, I'm not trying to disable any codecs. I'm only trying to get rid of some of the noise in the event logs so when I do have an issue, it's easier to find.
I did find something else. The Microsoft-Windows-WMI-Activity/Operational log gets the following info entry about .06 seconds before the error occurs: Source: WMI-Activity Event ID: 5857 User: NETWORK SERVICE CIMWin32 provider started with result code 0x0. HostProcess = wmiprvse.exe; ProcessID = 6148; ProviderPath = %systemroot%\system32\wbem\cimwin32.dll
I found this activity by writing a script that checks all the event logs during the minute the errors occurs. This is the only activity that repeatedly happens, including the .06 seconds before I get the error.
If I can figure out why CIMWin32 is triggered by Firefox during this process (if that is really what is happening), then that might get me one step closer. This does not occur using IE.
I just found the issue does not happen when I start Firefox in safe mode. But if I restart and disable all the add-ons, the same errors occurs. That's now pointing me in the direction of a configuration. This will be a tedious and time consuming process to figure out which setting(s) it might be.

Firefox's Safe Mode disables:
- extensions
- hardware acceleration (Firefox's performance settings)
- JavaScript compilers
- userChrome.css / userContent.css files, if any
Since it appeared to be video related (Microsoft.VP9VideoExtensions_1.0.20952.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbw) I searched for FireFox video errors. Apparently, I'm not the only one who has problems with the Performance Settings. After doing a bit more research, I found several examples where disabling the checkboxes under Performance resolved various issues. For me, it requires both "Use recommended performance settings" and "Use hardware acceleration when available" to be unchecked. It also made FireFox resovle pages quicker.
Issue Resolved!
