Good morning. I am using Firefox 57.0, however this problem did start about 2 weeks ago on the previous version.

I have a secure HTTPS web site that has Directory Privacy set, requiring authorisation by username and password. Until recently, when you connected to the site a popup appeared allowing you to enter the username and password.

Now the site just waits in the browser with no prompt showing, until you close Firefox and then the ‘authorisation required” prompt shows (after Firefox has closed). Internet Explorer and Chrome work fine.

This occurs on all sites requiring a username/password.

Many thanks!

Cheers ...Steve

Hi Steve, I'm not sure I follow the sequence: you close the page or exit Firefox and then a new dialog pops open in the page (preventing it from closing) or in a separate window? Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem. If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
and OK the restart. Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh). Any improvement?

Hi jscher2000. Thanks for your super quick reply.

I feel rather silly that I didn't try this before. From your advice, I've quickly determined that it is the PureVPN Extension causing the problem. I've disabled it and it now works properly.

Thanks again for your help - don't you wish all problems were that easy:-)

Have a great day:-)

Cheers ...Steve
