thunderbird emails disappear
Incoming thunderbird emails disappear and cannot be found within the system. they also come down and appear in any order randomly withoui any reference to time or date.

Personally I would recommend leaving the current situation alone and making it the "master" and changing the mail settings on the other machine to leave messages on the server indefinitely.
That way you know exactly what is on the server and you have a simple method to clean it up. (pressing delete in Thunderbird.) It would also facilitate using the email account with a phone or other mobile device as your mail would be synchronized across the devices.
Should quota space on the server allow I would suggest making everything IMAP.
However you asked about the reverse. Use the account action button in account settings to delete the account and recreate is as POP.

It appears from prelininary investigation that the inbox is only holding the emails that are on the ip server, that it may be dumping on closure and recalling on startup. we picked up a virus in november 2015 and had the unit "professionally" cleaned which turned out to be anything but. my ultimate solution is to uninstal then download a new copy of thunderbird. any advice would be appreciated.
Is the account configured as IMAP or POP?
configured as pop 3 on server settings.
Matt - double checked - setting is IMAP Mail Server. This may be the problem. We have two machines which are both on windows 7 and are supposed to be identical. I assume that the professional that cleaned the virus problem changed the setting to access our emails and I didn'trealize this situation. I kept checking the settings on the functioning one. Would appreciate info on how to change this setting.
