Hmm, it should work in Firefox 40, but the old Norton Toolbar won't work in Firefox 42, which was released today. I suggest trying a different variant of Firefox called the Extended Support Release (ESR) for the time being -- it is currently based on Firefox 38 with some security updates. It is unlikely to have any changes related to add-on compatibility until next year.

Norton is likely to continue to support ESR until the new toolbar update planned for this month. After that, I'm not sure what they will do because normally they only support a small range of versions.

If you decide to try it, here is how I suggest installing it:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 38.4.0esr from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\FxOld

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\FxOld

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Success?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that FxOld folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

• \FxOld\Plugins
• \FxOld\browser\plugins

The install of V38esr didn't work so I have tried several other remedies and all have the same problem, the Norton ID Safe vault does not appear on the Norton toolbar. I installed Firefox V37 and found Norton incompatible. I then installed V38 32 bit and then V38 64 bit. I next installed V39. After each install I ran the Norton Live Update. Each install had the same problem. Norton says that the ID SAfe vault should work with V39. WRONG. Any ideas?

Uh-oh, you may be in limbo. According to a support article dated 11/03/2015:

We have released a new version of the Norton Toolbar that is compatible with Mozilla Firefox versions 40, 41, and 42.

The Norton Toolbar extension includes the following features.

• Safe Web
• Antiphishing
• Safe Search

Unfortunately, the following features are not available in this release.

• Norton Identity Safe
• Share via Facebook

We are working to restore these features in a later release.

I don't know whether there is any way to "roll back" that toolbar update. Maybe contact Symantec support? (The forum has so many posts about the toolbar I didn't notice this question. http://community.norton.com/en/search.../firefox%20identity%20safe?solrsort=ds_created%20desc)

My question concerned that automatic update of Firefox. I installed Firefox V36 in an attempt to cure the Norton ID Safe problem but that did not work either but in the mean time Firefox started an automatic upgrade. When viewing the Version dialog box it stated that I was on the "beta update channel". How do I get off this beta update channel? When I have a version installed and configured as I want it I don't want any upgrade until I confirm that it will meet my requirement.

To get off the beta track, don't install beta releases. How did you find that one? Please do not trust random installers from unofficial sites.

And... right now, there is no version of Firefox that will show Identity Safe / Vault on the Norton Toolbar because the latest Norton Toolbar update dropped that feature.
