Since TB 38.2.0 update, pop-up window alert for new email is sometimes just a grey box, no text or nav. Clicking upper right corner closes it as if close icon were there. Can't see any pattern to when text appears in the box and when it doesn't. Will do a screen shot and repost the next time it happens.

Have a look at options | advanced | general. Is hardware acceleration unchecked?

Yes, hardware acceleration unchecked.

Royce,

Does it help to ENABLE hardware acceleration?

more options

Enabling hardware acceleration doesn't help. Neither does SafeMode.

I am also experiencing bug 1196662 (Thunderbird not checking for mails and becomes unresponsive after hibernation) - noticed you asked on the bug thread if this was related and the answer appeared to be "no".

Bug 1196662 is the bigger problem. Any idea when it will be fixed? If not soon, how can I downgrade to 38.1? Didn't have any of these problems with that build.

Version 38.3.0 is now out, which resolved unresponsive after hibernation

more options

Apparently so. Don't see the greyed out popup boxes anymore and all the slowing down issues seem to be resolved. There does seem to be some new inconsistent behavior (or maybe I just didn't notice it before) - the message in the status bar used to be regularly "Downloading message x of y" when downloading messages, now it's sometimes "Downloading messages" or even just "Checking inbox..." with no "Downloading..." message at all. Doesn't seem to affect functionality however.
