With a link to a downstreamed video, I get an Adobe Flash Player Settings box from someone asking to store information on my [Macintosh] computer: it's dead.

The Adobe Flash Player Settings box that pops up in front of a streamed video wants me to allow or deny accepting information for my computer. But the box is dead. None of the activation buttons work: the "allow," "deny," "folder icon," and "question" buttons are totally inactive. I have downloaded the latest Adobe Flash twice with no change, have looked for "Flash" in Firefox's plug-in pages and elsewhere and haven't found anything that will work. The problem does NOT exist on other Macintosh computers that I use. This one, with the problem, is a Mac Pro running OS 10.9.5 and the version of Firefox that I have is 38.0.1, and I'm using AOL to access the video feed. Image added. In the past, I've had to click that button several times before it was recognized. I don't know the reason for that.

If you want to try giving blanket permission for 10KB or 100KB, that probably would bypass most of these prompts. You can do that on Adobe's management page (Macromedia invented Flash and was acquired by Adobe ages ago):

Thanks, but I've had what you described, too, and several clicks were sometimes necessary. But, this is different. Clicking on the buttons does absolutely nothing. It is as though the image is nothing but a graphic, not an interactive window. Doesn't happen to me using Safari nor does it happen to me using a Mac laptop with Firefox nor an iMac.

Does it make any difference if you try the video in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the option key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any difference?

I'll check it out, but not until later on: I have to get up very early in the morning. Thanks for continuing the suggestions! I will let you know. Incidentally, I did try the Adobe memory adjustment, to no avail.

Do you have this problem with all the Flash settings windows?

You can try to clear the Flash settings folder on the hard drive to see if that helps.

  • Macintosh OS X: /Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash_Player/

In Mac OS X v10.7 and later, the ~/Library folder is a hidden folder.


Do you have a "Adobe Flash Player Preferences" application on Mac?

I think that Windows has it in "Windows Control Panel > Flash Player" and I have it on Linux, so I assume that you also have this on Mac.
