Can graphic emoticons be sent in plain text emails instead reverting to the text version (e.g. :-) or ;-(

plain text by it's very definition does not contain graphics. It is text and text only.
Thunderbird will display those text smilies as graphics, but it is the only mail program I am aware of that does it.
