Have Thunderbird 31.3.0. You must have changed within the last couple of days (today 1/5/15). When addressing to send: NOW: I typed “b” and my name and others appear below it. I select the 2nd name with the cursor. The selected name appears in TO, or BCC, etc. Then to add another name, I click enter, My name shows instead of the second name and the cursors moves to next blank. This never happened before. When I selected the name with the cursor and it appeared on the line it stayed there when I hit enter.

Not a problem but it appears that there is no pattern to the names that appear when a letter or name is typed in TO or BCC etc.

Why do some names appear in red and others in black?

Being 85 years old and not a computer geek. I would appreciate an answer to my email since I’m not sure how to get info off your site: [email protected]

re :Why do some names appear in red and others in black?

Red font usually means the email address is not in any address book. However, there is a bug associated with the autocomplete that has a habit of returning red font on occassions. The red font does not cause any issue with sending.

If you really do not want any red font to appear at any time, there is a fix. It is possible to completely switch this off so red font does not occur.

  • 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'General' tab
  • click on 'Config Editor' button - it will tell you to be careful :)
  • In top search type; autoComplete
  • look for this line:- mail.autoComplete.highlightNonMatches; Value = 'True'
  • Double click on that line to toggle the 'True' to 'False'
  • Then close window - top right X
  • click on 'OK' to save changes to Options.
  • Close and restart Thunderbird.

This is known and reported bug which the developers are working on as a critical fix. Please note this bug only occurs if you use TAB or ENTER.

Two options, but I recommend option 2. 1. If you use your mouse to select email address and use mouse to move to next line then it does not occur.

2. Suggest you use this method. This method does not require using the TAB or ENTER keys, so will not produce the bug.

In new Write mesage.

  • Use the Contacts Sidebar
  • 'View' > 'Contacts sidebar' or toggle view using f9 key.
  • select address book Select contact(s)
  • click on 'Addto TO' button or other options.

You can follow the bug here:

You can 'Vote' for the bug...in top section where it says:

  • Importance: -- critical with 13 votes (vote)

This is not a 'chat' or 'support' forum, it is used for reporting bugs and the developers will use it, So do not enter comments unless adding new useful data, but you can vote for it. You would need to register in order to vote etc.

Thanks Toad-Hall for sending info to my email. Your answers were very helpful. I am not concerned re red or black enteries. Glad to hear they are working on a bug (1107844). Use of method 1 is very helpful and method 2 taught me an alternative. Thanks again. I enjoy using TB.
