All my tiles are gone when I open a new tab, how do I get them back?

This is hopeless. Suddenly, all my frequently used tiles are gone from the "new tab"-page. And they do not restore, even if I visit the same pages. The new tab-page are just full of empty squares. How do I get them back? I tried to follow the instructions on how to get new tiles in, but the buttons that I'm supposedly to use are not present. Thanks so much for replying. This is driving me crazy!

You can check the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page and make sure that the pref is set to about:newtab

  • the default new tab page with the tiles is about:newtab
  • the default home page is about:home
  • for a blank page use about:blank

See this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):

This doesn't work. Or it is too difficult for me to understand. When I go to the about:newtab, a new tab just appears and I have the same problem with empty tiles.

Can you drag a history item or bookmark in a tile?

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Never remember history).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

Yes, I can drag a history item or bookmark to a tile, and several will appear in tiles. BUT, they disappear again as soon as I open a new tab. Settings are set to "Remember history".

Do you still have the about:newtab page if you open that new tab?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
