Some more info:

Current Firefox versions use the search engine that is selected in the search bar (click the search engine icon to open the drop down list) on the Navigation Toolbar for searching via the location bar and for the search engine on the about:home page.

If you want to use different search engines then you can install the Keyword Search extension to specify with search engine to use for the location bar and which search engine to use for the about:home page via the Options/Preferences windows of this extension, accessible via the about:addons page (Firefox > Add-ons).

hello jadgate, google.com/firefox was the default homepage in firefox 3 and earlier versions. now it is hardcoded to display the "outdated version" message no matter which version you're using to view it.

the default homepage in newer versions of firefox is now about:home - you should change that in your settings: How to set the home page

Phillip-

Thanks for your prompt reply. While about:home does allow you to search, for me at least, it re-directs to the yahoo search engine, which is not what I want. My goal is to bypass the google home page search (because of its annoying autocomplete feature, which doesn't allow you to even type in a complete phrase). Is there anyway to modify the default search engine from yahoo to google easily?

I found this thread, which seems to explain a way to do it, but it seems very kludgy and not for the technical faint of heart:

Also, it would be nice to get a notice on the google/firefox page that that link is outdated.

Later,

Jim

the search field on about:home will use the same search provider that you have set in the search bar, so you can easily change that to google: Search bar - add, change and manage search engines on Firefox
