when i tried to follow the directions to get to the pop up blocker, it says to go to options then to the content bar and then click on do not allow pop ups from there but under my options bar there is only menu bar, navigation toolbar, bookmarks toolbar, add on bar, toolbar layout. another website said to click on preferences and i have no preferences option either. please help as these pop ups are getting out of control.

Firefox button -> Options -> Content.

edit: Forgot to add, the Popup Blocker is enabled by default.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page. Look for a good pop-up blocker.

Sometimes the pop-up windows are generated by an add-on instead of the website itself. You might want to test for that by surfing for a while in Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled (Flash and other plugins still work)

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Any difference?

If that helps, check out your extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, if it looks unfamiliar and you aren't sure it has a useful purpose, go ahead and disable it.

After you exit Safe Mode and restart in normal mode, any luck?

FredMcD, there is no Popup Blocker extensions since Firefox has one built in ever since.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
