Hi I don't know whether its due to running a 32bit firefox on an 64 bit system but the firefox keeps crashing especially when running things with flash player and printing from the browser. Basically firefox freezes and I have to force close it using task manager. its ok to do this but somewhat annoying so wondered whether switching to a 64 bit version of firefox would help and if so how I would do this many thanks.

There is no 64 bit version of Firefox at the moment.

Did you try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox?

You can also check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that have a "bp-" prefix:

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page.

  • You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website, or open the crash reports page via "Help > Troubleshooting Information".

There is a 64 bit version for Mac and Linux (Nightly only) but 32 bit runs fine on Windows.

You may also wish to try safe mode.

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

FirefoxSafeMode

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

Incorrect on being Nightly only. It is common knowledge that there are 64-bit Firefox releases builds for Linux and Mac OSX from Mozilla ever since the Firefox 4.0 release. The Mac OSX is combined 32/64 while Mozilla does not make the 64-bit release builds quite so visible (perhaps because many 64-bit users will get it from their Linux distro) as you have to get it on ftp ex: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/24.0/linux-x86_64/

It is only on the unstable Nightly development channel that there are 64-bit Windows builds however they are not officially supported and are mainly for to catch breakage/regressions and are Tier-3 compared to the officially supported Tier-1 builds.
