I downloaded the Pirate Browser, which is apparently a Firefox add-on, but it doesn't appear in either the add-ons list or in the list of programs in Windows Control Panel. How do I uninstall the program?

Pirate Browser is not a Firefox addon but a Firefox bundle, therefore, it can't be removed from add-ons. In the case you downloaded it in a zip package, just delete the folder where it's stored, in other cases there should be some uninstall feature.

Anyway, if you just want to get Firefox back, just install Firefox again and leave the other browser as-is. They are fully independent.

According to this - http://piratebrowser.com/#faq - it's a full browser built upon Firefox Portable, with the Tor client (Vidalia), FireFox Portable browser (with foxyproxy addon) and some custom configs ...

Being that it is an executable download - PirateBrowser_0.5.exe installer it should appear in the Windows Control Panel and would need to be uninstalled from there.

Sorry, not a Firefox support issue.

How exactly is he meant to uninstall it through the program list in the control panel if it isn't in there?!

I come across this problem all the time now and know one seems to have an answer for hidden add-ons. Mozilla and Explorer both took it on but I got rid of it in Explorer in a jiffy. How about mozilla? CarolineIn order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:

  1. From the Firefox window click the Firefox button at the top left and select Add-ons, or, if the Firefox button is not shown, click the Tools menu and click Add-ons.
  2. Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the Extensions button on the left side of the window.
  3. You should now see a list of your installed extensions on the right side together with buttons on the right side of each extension.
  4. To remove an extension from Firefox, simply click the Remove button. You should see a message that informs you about the successful removal of the add-on.
  5. Note that some add-ons require a Firefox restart to be removed completely. To perform a Firefox restart after the add-on removal, click the Restart now link in the message.

Some extensions hide themselves. To remove them, restart Firefox in its Safe Mode where they are deactivated and cannot hide.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Does that let you remove it?

If the extension can been seen on the Add-ons page in Safe Mode but does not have a remove button, Firefox most likely is picking it up from one of these:

(1) An entry in the Windows registry (for example, security software toolbars often are found this way)

  • On my 64-bit Windows 7, these are under:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox\extensions

(2) A folder in Firefox's program folder. Check here:

  • 32-bit Windows:
    • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions
    • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\browser\extensions
  • 64-bit Windows:
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\extensions
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\browser\extensions

This is helpful in that I know more of what is not there. The add-on is not in the extensions file or in the registry. Maybe it is not an add-on?

Hi caroline.coit, what exactly are the error messages or problems that you're encountering?

Hi, After three full days of trying to get rid of Sweet-page everytime I started my browsers, I accidently found a note at the bottom of the "bad" page. I had always avoided clicking on the page before due to fears of viruses flooding out. So the note said how to unregister from this page. I simply went into my shortcuts for the browsers properties and changed it there. Well at last! Thanks for all your help though. I was glad to have someone behind me. Caroline
