I have Google set to show results in a new window, never use Google instant & search filtering off. When I click on a link on the results page Firefox reverts to the search results page almost instantly. I can of course select the desired page (via windows Aero). This happens on several computers, PCs & Laptops.
Not a major problem but VERY irritating. This seems to have happened from a few update ago ?

This can be caused by corrupted cookies or cookies that aren't send or otherwise blocked.
Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
- Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
- Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Many thanks for that, I'll certainly try it. I have to say that I'm a little sceptical given that I frequently use 'clear recent history' along with 'Boostspeed' clean up software, defraging etc followed by making a HDD image. (I'm a bit paranoid after a total loss due to HDD failure) I say sceptical because I have not changed my regular routine for a long time and this problem seems at least to have occoured recently. I must admit that at present I have'nt been able to establish a pattern as to when this happens, ie particular types of link etc, it seems to be random. I have intended but not yet tried 'open results in a new tab' instead. As I said originally not a major problem but 'bloody' anoying!
If you set Google to show results in a new window then Firefox should normally open the results in a new tab instead of replacing the results page in the current tab with that link.
Are you using build-in Firefox means to clear cookies and other possible personal data or external cleanup software?
The latter can cause files to get corrupted and cause issues like you described, so it is best to avoid using those.
Thanks for the very prompt response. I use 'tools>clear recent history' in Firefox followed by 'remove junk files' and 'repair registry' and defrag in Auslogics Boostspeed clean up software (Firefox is closed at this point). A few weeks ago I did try un-installing Firefox and then re-installing it but it made no difference. It's curious that this happens on more than one machine, however they are both running Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit and are both regularly cleaned up in the same way. In addition I have a friend who has exactly the same problem but as far as I am aware does'nt use any external clean up software.
UPDATE: I have now found a fairly consistent example of the problem.
1) Clear recent history (Everything) in Firefox. 2) Close Firefox. 3) Re-start Firefox and set Google preferences as per Image A. 4) From Google(.co.uk) Home page search Red Dwarf. 5) Select the result shown by the arrow per Image B. 6) Image C should open in a new page.
If you follow the example above then about nine times out of ten the required page will open but within a split second reverts to the results page (image B). If you then select the required page using Windows Aero, no problem everything works fine. I have tried the same example in IE8 and cannot replicate the problem. However, I also cannot replicate the problem in Firefox if I use a new tab instead of a new window see image D.
Perhaps I’m just being unreasonable but I like to open results in a new window and then any sub results in a new tab from there. To me this has the advantage that I can keep track better in complicated multi branch searches.

Does this still happen if you run Firefox in Safe mode?
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
Many thanks for your reply. Your very helpful suggestions set me off on a trial and error search and I think I have found the problem or at least a workaround. I have discovered that if I disable 'Shockwave Flash' in add ons the problem is solved. All my other add ons are enabled. I do have the latest version 11.5.502.110. Using my example search above it is totally predictable and works correctly every time with the add on disabled. See images. I have now checked this on 3 completely different machines although they are all running Windows 7. If this is a bug it will be interesting to see if it gets fixed. Many thanks for your help.
