I can't get the Firefox icon to remain in my tray on a MAC OS X 10.5.8
That's the story: I download, but when I close firefox, the icon disappears from the tray at the bottom of the screen.

You mean the dock. You can put the Firefox icon in the dock by dragging the icon from where Firefox is installed and dropping it on the dock.
