On two of my PCs I received a notice that Firefox has a critical update that should be installed NOW. It takes me into running a program "updater.exe" and pops a firefox window "Software Update" which says it's "Downloading Firefox" and the green bar runs across the window and the text ":Connecting to the update server" appears under the moving bar. That's about all that it does forever. No connect, no update, just the bar going across the window. If it was on ONE of my PCs, I'd think that the PC has a problem. The same results on TWO PCs, one Vista and one XP, makes me think there is some other issue at hand... Please help.

See:

Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.
You may need to delete active-update.xml and updates.xml as well if present.
Vista:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
(%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)

If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

The directory you suggest I delete does not appear to exist on either my Vista PC or on the XP... I tried re-installing Firefox 4 but that did not seem to fix the issue either. I supp ose I can UNINSTALL first and then install, but I don't have warm fuzzies about that solution either.
