Firefox 3.6.8 under Win 7 can not link to streaming audio, such as NPR
It can call up Winamp or Win Media Player, but both of them lock up with a message about "waiting for video. . ."
One has to give up and try under IE, which is a 64-bit app on this machine. It can successfully manage a handoff to an audio player.

With the update to the Flash plugin per cor-el's post, you can listen to NPR's live news stream from this link: http://www.npr.org/programs/ or, if your local station offers live audio streams, find your local station here: http://www.npr.org/stations/
