I recently installed Thunderbird and connected it to my gmail account. When it synced to gmail, the labels in Gmail were made into folders in Thunderbird. I expected that and that feature makes more sense.

Gmail also has a category called 'promotions' and 'social' that identifies and tags certain emails as being in promotions (such as ads from stores) and social (e.g. email from realtors). The nice feature here is that email that fall into promotions or social aren't displayed in the inbox...it filters out the garbage email.

When I connected to Gmail from Thunderbird, the email associated with promotions and social got dumped into my inbox, e.g. a corresponding folder was not created. How can I get this functionality into Thunderbird so that emails in gmail marked as 'promotion' get placed into a promotions folder? Ideally, I 'd like to have this happen automatically without creating a bunch of filters in Thunderbird. Thanks for the help J

It looks like you can do this by creating filters in gmail for different categories, then subscribe the folders (labels) in TB:
