I manage hundreds computers. Many of which are not tied to a specific user (think, library, or school). I recently noticed that many of them are behind a version for firefox (as of writing this, firefox is as 73, and the computer labs are at 72). we do not enforce a policy through GPO or policy.jason. we do no use ESR release. but even with the ESR release. I am seeing the same issue. I could not find any significant detail on the nature of the automatic update process for firefox (how it runs, when it runs, how to tell if it ran or not, logs, etc.. ). I also cannot find anyway I can kick it off programmatically. It seems that it needs to be done while a user is logged in. For me, I need this to update without the user. Can I initiate a update in the background ? can I configure when the update kicks off? where can I look to see logs of when this happens?

During the first week only a limited audience gets an update offered to check for possible issues with the new release. If there are issues detected and a minor (dot) update is pending then updates may be set on hold. In case of Firefox 73 there have been problems reported that prevent Firefox from getting started on Windows 10 and there is a updated planned for next week. So maybe just be patient for the next week(s).

Okay. That helps clears some things. is there a way I can check that this has happened or not. like a last updated timestamp.

Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar. Then Help > About Firefox will tell you what version have. WARNING: and install any updates.
