Hi! I run Firefox in a VirtualBox VM. It regularly crashes on web pages (reddit, facebook) if I scroll down quite a bit. Not sure if it's a Firefox or VirtualBox issue. Attaching a screenshot of error that appears on the VirualBox host when that happens.

Hi draito,

Are you using Virtual Box for Linux and have you seen if its currently up-to-date?

When did this start happening or has it always and have you tried other web browsers.

In the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager you could try to free up the Memory and increase the amount of Processors in the System settings if you haven't already.

Let me know if there is anything else we should know!

The screenshot shows a .exe file, so it is likely that the OP is running the VirtualBox in a Windows environment.

Is there enough memory available for Firefox to run properly?

Did you check the Windows Event log for more detail ?

Host: Windows 10 Pro 1809 64 bit CPU: i3-7100; 3.9 GHz; 2C/4T RAM: 16 GB Drive: Samsung SSD 860 Pro 512 GB

Guest: Windows 10 Pro 1809 64 bit CPU: 2 cores RAM: 6000 MB (5.86 GB) Drive: 50 GB/ 27 GB free

Should I increase memory or cores available to the guest? When I was setting it up I thought it should be OK?

I noticed it quite a while back. I tried Edge a couple of times but it did not have that issue.

Yes, Windows. The VM is configured with 6000 MB of RAM.

The Event Log doesn't have any errors around the time of the crash except for the standard one about an unexpected shutdown. I looked on the host and the guest.

Once it crashes Windows asked if I want to debug it. I tried that but only got it to complain about an invalid license data for Visual Studio 2010.

A memory size of 2048 should be enough.

You could try a different version of VirtualBox and see the issue goes away. I noticed the official website has a list of Old Builds.

Could you please try Firefox Nightly and see if it gives you the same issue?

A newer version of VirtualBox was release and I updated to it. Downloaded and installed Nightly (71.0a1) and had the same issue.

There are a few other ideas that come to mind.

  • Windows File Checker
  1. Type in Command Prompt or cmd into the search box.
  2. Right-click on the icon and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Type in sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. If Windows finds anything wrong with system files, it will try and fix it.
  5. Restart your computer
  • Scan for malware
  1. Install Malwarebytes for Windows and other and other security software

Reference: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware

  • Run Windows Update
  1. Type in update into the search box.
  2. Click Check for updates
  3. If you installed any updates Restart Windows

Sfc found some errors but it's fixed now. I have Webroot but also did a scan with Malwarebytes. No infections found. Windows is up to date. Still had the same thing happen although it doesn't seem to happen as often. I'll run Memtest86 overnight to see if it finds anything.

Memtest86 didn't find any issues with RAM.
