Typing in address field in Thunderbird very very slow.
I have tried: reinstalling TB, running in safe mode, compacting folders, and deleting unwanted addresses from address book. No improvement at all!

Under Preferences/Composition/Addressing, is 'Local Address Books' checked or 'Directory Server'?
Both are checked at the moment.
If you don't need to scan address books on a server, uncheck the "Directory Server' option and see if it helps.
