Why does Thunderbird automatically download new messages when I have it set not to do this?
Under Server Settings in the Account Settings I have unchecked both the "Check for new messages at startup" and the "Check for new messages every [xx] minutes" boxes. But the program is still downloading and displaying new messages when they arrive. Can someone please tell me how to keep this from happening? Thanks for any help.

There's nowt so queer as folk. It's an email client, used to allow people to communicste and you're asking how to stop it doing what it's designed to do.
Is this account set up to use IMAP? Many IMAP servers now use a "push" mode where they offer messages to the client as and when they arrive. The settings you have adjusted control when the client asks for messages, but can't change what happens if the server just decides to give it those messagrs.
If you look into account settings, possibly under advanced, you should be able to see a setting for IDLE. Changing that may help.
Hi - thanks for your reply. I searched for a setting for IDLE in account settings but I did not find anything. I was on an IMAP server, but I changed it to a pop server because I thought that might give me more options to control the download of messages. But apparently not. I actually have what I feel is a legitimate reason for controlling when I download my mail. I think that you could do this in earlier versions of Thunderbird?
