The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Thank you.

I tried the reset, but the browser is just as slow as ever. Will you be updating it soon, or can you advise on how to roll it back?

I have seen many other complaints about this issue and if it persists I will move to Chrome (after 10 years with FF).

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

You will need to restart Firefox for this to take effect so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.,) and then perform these steps:

In Firefox 54 and below:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
  3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

In Firefox 55 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Under Performance, uncheck Use recommended performance settings. Additional settings will be displayed.

  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  5. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

If the problem is resolved, you should check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in these Knowledge base articles:

Thank you.

Try to disable accessibility services in Firefox.

Thanks but it was the first thing I did. It seems to have improved since the reset slightly, but still slower than the previous version.

Try to find a update for your Video Card Drivers : https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html

You could try this please : Go the Menu then Tools --> Options --> Performance and untick everything. change the recommended size lower then see how it runs. Note: 0 = No Multi-proccesor = slow again. This can lower the amount of cores that Firefox uses for multiprocessing. Restart Firefox after making these changes please.

FIREFOX TO SLOW

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

I think you all have the same problem as i do...the "fastest browser" sits and DOES NOTHING when you click on buttons...then after 30 seconds, it DOES SOMETHING. Currently on 57.0.2 "pretend Quantum". I think the problem lies with the LACK OF ACTION. Remember the clockwise / counter clockwise indicators that is now some crappy blurb that moves left and right? The crappy blurb only does something when IT FEELS LIKE IT. This is a random thing, but I do surveys for IPOS/I-say. At least once every survey I find that I click on a button...and click...and click..

I believe Mozilla is HIDING the fact that they AREN'T any faster than they used to be. They apparently picked up Chrome's BAD HABIT of posting more cpu processes than they need. I have (3) tabs open. I have (6) processes holding 1224740 of memory hostage. How do you feel about that?
