This suddenly started happening about a week ago. (~Oct 17th or so). When I go to some websites (for example, mail.yahoo.com) the tab will crash after a few seconds of browsing. I will get the "gah, your tab crashed" error. Clicking on the reload tab button reloads the page, shortly after it crashes again.

I have followed the steps outlined in the help section (for example, check for malware, install another version of Firefox, start in safe mode with add-ons disabled - I do not have any add-ons installed to begin with), and am still having the problem. I have updated to the beta version of Firefox and it's still happening.

Here is the crash report, but it is not for individual tabs. It's for when the entire program crashes.

Would really appreciate help in resolving this, as I do not want to resort to IE or Chrome for my browser!

Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers.

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP- in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most recent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box and paste them in.

You said the crash happens when you go to certain websites like Yahoo. Can you list some of the others?

Does it crash when you get to the site or after some time there? The first 2 reports show the browser was active for 3-4 days. Any problems before the crash?

The last report shows a crash after 1 minute. What were you doing?

Note: The reports I listed did not show much information, But the other reports showed;

nvd3dumx.dll = NVIDIA Graphics Driver

See if there are updates for your graphics drivers https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

Hello, To answer your first post, yes, the problem has persisted even though I updated to 57 about 3-4 days ago.

from your second post, the crash happens at maps.google.com, and some other websites (I can start to keep a log for other sites so I have more to report back to you). Sometimes the page won't even load - it just goes straight to the "Gah" error. Sometimes it will crash after I've been on the page, anywhere from a few seconds or a minute or so later.

I don't know if the browser crash reports will be helpful because the entire program doesn't crash, just individual tabs when I try to visit some websites. So, i don't remember what I was doing after that 1 minute crash occurred.

For your last post, since there are no updates for my graphics card (it's rather old), I turned off hardware acceleration under performance options. The tabs continue to crash.

Those times the browser was online for 3 days, did you visit any pages with a video/audio player?

The crashes that happen very fast, was there a player on that page?

I suspect the player/graphics is causing the problem.

I'm not sure what you mean - do you mean pages with audio or video on them? Even if that's what you mean, I do not remember if I was viewing pages with those at that time.

Another website I noticed the tabs crash on is www.yelp.com

mail.yahoo.com crashes the tab when I try to reply to an email or drag and drop an attachment. maps.google.com is an example of page that crashes the tab immediately.

I have installed it and will let you know if I still get the message.

Does this only happen in the beta version you currently use or also in the current release (56.0.2)?

You can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Hello cor-el, It happened in the beta version as well as the version I had installed previously (I think that was 56 or 55, I don't remember anymore).

So far it has not happened with the version FredMcD asked me to install. I will try your solution of using a new profile and let you know if that works. But I think I'll have to try your solution with the upgraded version, since 52 isn't causing the problem (at least not yet - haven't experienced any tabs crashing since I've installed it)

Thanks

You can try to modify multi-process settings to see if this has effect.

  • set dom.ipc.processCount to 1 if it is currently set to a higher value (4)
  • disable multi-process windows in Firefox

You can disable multi-process windows in Firefox by setting these prefs to false on the about:config page.

  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false
  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

You can check for issues caused by plugins.

  • set plugins (Flash) to "Ask to Activate" on the about:addons page ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins)
  • plugins are not affected by Firefox Safe Mode

Hello, just an update - I've been using the older version of firefox that FredMcD suggested and haven't seen any issues so far.

Should I continue using that version or upgrade and try Cor-el's suggestions?

Firefox continues to update its security features. You can use it for now.

One thing you should think about;

Are you using the 64bit Firefox? Many have reported issues. Install the 32bit version from; Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}
